Portland Hotels seeks to meet environmental expectations set by stakeholder, guests, visitors and the general public
As part of the wider Corporate Social Responsibility, Portland Hotels understands the requirement it has to engage with environmental issues not only for meeting statutory obligations and gaining financial benefits but especially to ascertain that future generations are also able to enjoy the benefits of a healthy environment
The way Portland Hotels implements and operates this environmental responsibility is briefly expressed below
Environmental Policy
The company’s commitment is expressed in the Environmental Policy (>>LINK TO POLICY) which also highlights key aspects of the day to day implementation
Environmental Management System (EMS)
The EMS expresses the main framework of Portland Hotels’ environmental obligations highlighting
Energy and Utility Management
Prevention of Environmental Pollution and Contamination
Waste Management
Emergency Response
The main purpose of the EMS is: to reduce operating costs, to increase efficiency and productivity, to avoid prosecution, to generate more business and possibly obtain funding, to meet environmental expectations and to improve the company’s reputation amongst staff, customers and the public – just to name some of the key reasons
The way it works
Each hotel has a Green Team consisting of dedicated staff members/managers from different departments. The team is lead by a Green Team Manager, several Green meetings take place in each hotel per year
All hotels are enrolled in or work based on the Green Business Tourism Scheme (GBTS) and it is the company’s ambition to attain and then maintain the Gold accreditation for each hotel
Each hotel Green Team follows their specific 10 section action plan which forms the basis of the GBTS program. This action plan incorporates all essential environmental activities which includes key topics such as
Environmental Management and Marketing
Energy and Water Management
Purchasing Activities
Waste Management
Travel Recommendations
Engaging with Natural and Cultural Heritage
Green Team Managers meet twice a year and exchange best practice ideas and solutions and are encouraged to network with like minded managers from other establishments. Portland Hotels encourage environmental training and specialist knowledge within the hotel teams
All hotels are listed with the Green Business Partnership (GBP) where each hotel can go for support and guidance in particular by participating in events and networking with other businesses
As part of the GBP association, Portland Hotels is accredited with the three ticks of the Green Business Network which recognises the company’s engagement with environmental activities
The company has established a rigorous waste management program which is totally focussed on waste separation and recycling. This includes dealing with hazardous and special waste where and when applicable
The company monitors energy consumption in all hotels on a monthly basis and compares key indicators per periods and to industry norms. Conclusions are drawn from the results to encourage future improvements to support the reduction of the company’s carbon footprint
When hotels are refurbished, the company seeks to introduce the latest environmental advanced technical systems and encourages contractors to operate on an environmental friendly basis
